Split Shift Schedules Split shifts are separated by more than a regular break period. Employees agree to fill their work hours over two shifts or time slots in a day. For example, an employee may work from 08:00 to 13:00, take a break for four hours, and return to work from 17:00 to 21:00. A normal lunchtime break is not part of a split shift. ‘Metrobus claimed Samwu has retracted some of its extra demands but has retained one pertaining to ‘spread-over’ shifts - split shifts with a long break during the day.’ ‘Drivers were demanding regular 7.6-hour shifts, instead of split shifts that ranged from 4 to 10 hours long.’. A split shift is a type of shift-work schedule where a person's work day is split into two or more parts. A regular break for rest or to eat meals does not count as a 'split'. For example, a person may work from 05:00 to 09:00, take a break until 14:00 and then return to work until 19:00. Split Shift Workers who earn the minimum wage per hour are entitled to additional pay known as a “split shift premium” when their schedule includes a split shift. The premium is equal to one hour of pay at the rate of the minimum wage. (Industrial Welfare Commission Wage Orders 1-15, Section 4).
